Reaction roles & colour roles
Last updated: 11 October 2026
What it does
Staff set up panels: messages where members react with an emoji to pick up a role, like a colour, a game, or "ping me for events".
- React to get the role. Remove your reaction to lose it.
- Colour roles are one at a time: picking a new colour swaps out your old one (and its reaction).
- A colour's emoji is a colored ember: Liora's own gem in that colour. It is one of her own emojis, so it takes none of the server's emoji slots.
- If Liora was offline when you reacted, she catches up when she's back and gives you the role.
Role menus
Some servers use role menus instead: one message with a button for each kind of role (a rank, a game, the pings you want).
- Tap a button and Liora opens a dropdown that only you can see, with the roles you already have ticked.
- Tick a role to get it, untick it to lose it. Each change happens the moment you pick.
- Some menus are one at a time, like a rank or "DMs Open" and "DMs Closed": picking one swaps out the other, and "None of these" takes it off.
- The server's Reaction Roles switch turns role menus off too.
- If a role is on a reaction panel as well, unticking it in a menu also takes your reaction off that panel, so the two always agree.
- Staff build them on the dashboard's Role Menus page (it needs Manage Server, like the rest of the dashboard): a title, a few words and a button for each kind of role, with ready-made menus to start from, like continents, time zones, languages, star signs, interests and pings. Every choice can wear one of Liora's own gold icons.
- Liora makes the roles a menu still needs. A role she makes has no permissions at all, and a role that already has that name is used as it is instead of being made twice.
- A card can be changed in place, or posted again as a new message (so Discord doesn't mark it "edited"); the old message is then taken down. Removing a card deletes its message. The roles stay, and members keep what they picked.
- Posting, changing or removing a card on the dashboard is noted in the server's security log, with who did it.
- Staff tools:
!colorroles,!synccolors,!elevatecolorsand!syncreactions(all need Manage Roles, or one of Liora's own admins) keep colour roles tidy and hand out roles people reacted for earlier. They're also buttons on the dashboard.
Kept safe
- Never staff powers. Roles members pick up themselves never carry staff powers, like Administrator, Manage Server, Manage Roles, Ban, Kick or Timeout. If one gets linked to a panel by mistake, Liora refuses to hand it out and says why. The same rule applies to the Role Shop. Staff can still give such roles by hand.
- Muted members can't pick up roles by reacting, or from a role menu, while they're muted.
- Liora can only hand out roles below her own in the server's role list. If she can't, she says so for a moment in the channel.
- The Role Menus page checks all of this before anything is made: it won't put a role with staff powers, a bot's own role, @everyone or a role above Liora's on a card, and it says which one and why.
What she keeps
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Each panel's setup: which message, which emoji, which role | To know what to give | Until staff delete the panel |
| Each role menu's setup: which message, which menus, which roles, and how its card looks (title, words, colour, icons) | To know what to offer, and so staff can change it | Until the menu is removed |
Liora keeps nothing about who reacted or picked what, and nothing about who built a card. Your reactions and roles live in Discord itself, and removing your reaction (or unticking a role) removes the role.
